Treadmill vs Outdoor running

Fitness lovers have discovered the amazing benefits of the treadmill and walking or running in the outdoors. However, when it comes to the question of which is most effective at burning calories, people tend to favor one above the other.

Differences between running on a treadmill and outdoor exercises

1. Ease

Walking or running on the treadmill is easier on the joints than running outside, especially if it’s rough terrain. The treadmill also has features that are good for people with injuries. It is designed in a way that prevents the impact of any kind.

The treadmill is also really good for people who are just starting to workout. However, if you prefer the outdoors, make sure that the weather is favorable and the terrain is smooth.

2. Brain activity

On the other hand, walking or running in the outdoors keeps your brain active. You get to enjoy the beautiful scenery and observe your surroundings. This is something that cannot be done using the treadmill.

3. Air resistance

Running on a treadmill does not offer an air resistance unlike running outdoors. This resistance is good for increasing the intensity of the workout. Another bonus is that you don’t need any equipment for running in the outdoors.

How to increase intensity in both workouts

You can easily increase the intensity of your workout by varying your speed, resistance or incline (for the treadmill). This way you can burn more calories regardless of the method you use.

According to “Mayo Clinic”, an individual weighing 160 pounds can burn up to 157 calories by walking at a pace of 3.5 mph for 30 mins on a treadmill. Another individual with the same weight can lose 303 calories running in the outdoors at a pace of 5 mph for 30 mins.

For any workout, it is speed and intensity that matters. A good way to add more intensity while running outside is to increase your speed and run uphill.

You can create the effect of running uphill by increasing the incline on the treadmill by 1%. Also, make sure that you do not hang onto the rails. Doing this will make you burn fewer calories.

In reality, the best exercise regimen for you will be determined by your consistency. Choose a regimen that you can easily stick to and be consistent in. The best exercise regimen in the world is completely useless without consistency.
